Upcoming exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel

Hi Everyone,

I'm back in the studio again preparing for an upcoming exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel, Toronto curated by Shannon Gerard.

 
Using print as a primary strategy, the Open Studio Artist Members in PINK
PEARL work with paper, artist books, material arts, sculpture, and animation
to address notions of erasure, transcendence and accumulation. Print media
is often characterized by a material emphasis on subtraction and addition.
As a dug hole is mirrored by the mound of dirt it unearths, any removal of
material from the surface of a print matrix implies an accumulation
elsewhere. What meaning can be found in those liminal spaces between minus
and plus? Works in PINK PEARL move past surface engagements with etched
plates, burned screens, grained stones, carved wood and cut paper to explore
the concepts of erasure and transcendence. Using print as a primary
strategy, artists in PINK PEARL create works on paper, artist books,
material arts, sculpture, and animation.

Most of the year has been dedicated to learning the video editing program and compiling the film footage to create several short videos. Thanks to the fantastic filmakers Cliff Caines (www.cliffcaines.com) and the dynamic duo of Tara Cooper and Terry O'Neill (www.taracooper.com) who assisted me along the way! Here's a 1.5 minutes sneak peak of a 8 minute film. Sadly, my father passed away suddenly in June and never got to see any of this come to fruition. So this one is dedicated to my dad.

The Longing Project

Last year I had the opportunity to participate in an artist residency at Palazzo Rinaldi located in Southern Italy on the hilltop village or Noepoli. (www.palazzorinaldi.com - see previous posts). For several years I have explored the notion of acclimation and space relationships within nature and but always reflected the path my family took from Italy 60 years ago. As they settled in the suburbs of Toronto and raised my siblings and I, it was clear that new and old roles influenced our daily lives and upbringing often being a rich experience but peculiar all at the same time.

For years, I have felt a cultural limbo between the life my family established for me in Canada and the life they brought with them from Italy, which influenced us in many ways. As a result I have always felt a longing to belong.

Recently, I decided that it was time to go back to Italy for a family visit. But this was not going to be our regular vacation for my husband and I with the family. Rather, this trip was going to be a research excursion documenting the village and the homes my parents grew up in, as well as my extended family and the community at large. My intention was to travel from Central Italy primarily from the region of Lazio, the area where my family and ancesters reside to the Basilicata region in Southern Italy; my last stop Palazzo Rinaldi.

During my travels I accumulated hours of video footage, a large collection of photographs, interviews and stories. When I arrived at Palazzo Rinaldi, I spent a large chunk of time on drawing studies and the organization of video and film footage.

Finally had a chance to complete the most recent drawings. I have been working on a number of studies based on my interests in human interaction and the acclimation by an organism to environmental and physical change. The research of entomology, botany and elements such as birds, insects, and broken fragments of organic elements remind me of familial sites and surroundings both past and present. These studies created from charcoal and collaged screen prints on Gampi paper are part of on installation that is currently in progress.

Happy New Year everyone. I've had a great week in the studio drawing. I'm starting to work on a new body of work featuring human artifacts, insects, vegetables and animal life. I'm interested in these elements because they are born out nature but constantly being influenced and modified by culture, space and environment.

Palazzo Rinaldi Residency

I had the pleasure of spending 2 weeks this past August at Palazzo Rinaldi, a wonderful residency in the town of Naeopoli located in the Basilicata region. Such a wonderful experience that provided me with a beautiful surrounding and a uninterrupted time to focus on a new body of work. Here are a couple of pics from my residency.

Here's a couple of installation shots of my recent exhibition at LOOP Gallery "Artifacts of the Self-Made". There are 3 seperate bodies of work in this exhibition which include drawings, etchings and silkscreen on Gampi and Somerset paper.

Collecting is an important part of my practice as it not only informs my work through historical references but formally as well, as I am interested in finding relationships among these objects through shape, texture and links to memory. These collections generate curiosities within myself as it prompts a desire to know more about them and their stories. From this research, drawings, photos and unusual juxtapositions of these objects to create imagined hybrids and invented natural environments.

The images I create take the form of the human artifacts, vegetable and animal life. They are displayed within complex settings as delicate curiosities in my drawings and prints; the natural world connects the human-made world. I am interested in components familiar with particular landscapes and specific facets of nature, interwoven into new settings. I continue to document and display details of growth while many of these elements are drawn up through imagination producing new oddities of growth, complex root systems and hybridized forms of nature.

Here's a sneak peak of my upArt installation in progress. I will be exhibiting a wall of nine 20"x 20" multi-layered and laser cut prints titled "Minima Artificialia". They will be presented along with several screenprinted Japanese paper cutouts. I have printed 27 in total and they vary in colour. Here they are all laid out at the studio -Open Studio 401 Richmond Street. Come to the gala at the Gladstone Hotel on Friday evening from 7pm to midnight. If you can't make it on Friday it will be up for 4 days October 22-25th so check it out!

LOOP Gallery is moving from it's Queen Street location to 1273 Dundas Street( near Dovercourt. We've taken possession of the new space and the LOOP Collective has been busy renovating the the space...lots and lots of demolition! We have all been working hard tearing down walls, floors and rebuilding the gallery. It's looking great and we hope to be up and running by the end of August just in time for the first exhibition in the new space. Check back soon for new updates!

This is another great Public Art Sculpture not far from Anish Kapoor's. There are fountain spouts where the mouths are located. They are doing some maintenance work on the fountains so they weren't operational. If you look at the faces long enough you will witness them blinking and and smiling.

We managed to get outside and leave the conference site to check out other venues and some of the galleries. We spent alot of time enjoying the Anish Kapoor sculpture along Michigan mile. It looked amazing from every direction and captured the city in it's reflection.

This panel included an international group of artists who use extreme technology to make works that can only be called prints, but that are far removed from traditional printmaking techniques. This is recent print by Leslie Dill that involves LEDs and laser cut paper (3D printing).

I recently came back from Chicago where I attended the annual Southern Graphics Conference hosted by Columbia College. I travelled with Jill, Emma and Jocelyn all from Open Studio www.openstudio.on.ca. Chicago and the conference was great! Here's a couple of pics from one of the many portfolios on exhibit.

I have started to learn how to needle felt. It's a bit of a different direction for me but I've had this bag of sheep's wool for ages now. I'm hoping to make some 3 dimensional objects based on my drawings. We'll see what happens.

Visiting Artist at the Univeristy of South Dakota, Vermillion

I'm always reading everyone else's blog so I thought I would join the rest of the world and create my very own blog too. So here I am with my first official post. I'll do my best to keep you posted with all my current happenings studio stuff!

Last April (2008), I was invited by my good friend and colleague John Timothy Pizzuto. JT and I worked together at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida and he know heads up the Print Department at USD. So off I went to join JT and Patti at the Ponderosa! I seem to have all these friends who have these wonderful abodes in the most remote areas and I find myself always asking "how did you ever find this place?" Anyways, it's always nice to break from the bustling city.....so let's get back to the visit.

I spent a week editioning with the USD Grad students and JT. What a great experience it was working with the students. They worked really hard taking shifts assisting me in between chatting about their grad experience and their journey to USD.

Between all of the plates, screens and monotypes, I think there were about 10 layers and found myself working right down to wire. Here's a pic of Raina pulling one of the first layers of monotype.
